Rideau Centre / Arts Court Public Realm Plan

Ottawa

The Rideau Centre / Arts Court Precinct in Ottawa is at an exciting crossroads. As a result of a number of new city-building initiatives being pursued by the City of Ottawa and enhancement projects planned by the private sector, the area is positioned to undergo a significant transformation. It is imperative that the various interests in the study area, including transit plans, private development and the City’s plan to redevelop Arts Court, be considered in a comprehensive manner in order to reconcile competing demands and create a unified, walkable and beautiful public realm that prioritizes the pedestrian. Ken Greenberg in association with The Planning Partnership and Delcan has been retained by the City of Ottawa to prepare a Public Realm Plan to resolve competing interests by contemplating the needs of various stakeholders in conjunction with maintaining a ‘big picture’ view of the objective to redevelop and transform the area. Consideration for existing and future needs of the community, business owners, the City, developers, institutions and other stakeholders, along with servicing, loading and other technical issues. The goal is to arrive at a balanced strategy that results in a truly dynamic public realm environment and supports the various initiatives that are planned or underway.
